Lead Structural Engineer - Department Head in Training

Location: Salt Lake City, UT (Hybrid | travel across UT)

Employment: Full-time →

Compensation: Competitive base + performance bonus + benefits (health, PTO, 401k match)

Start Date: ASAP

👷 About the Role

This is not a typical professional or structural engineer role.

You are stepping in to lead the engineering department at Ballpark. Your mission is simple:

Free the founder (Jaiden) by owning the technical strategy, project oversight, and team execution across all active projects.

You won’t spend your days buried in calcs. You’ll spend them:

Setting up the game plan for each project.

Answering design questions from EITs and drafters.

Performing final QA and stamping with confidence and clarity.

You are a judgment-first engineer who thinks fast, speaks plainly, and knows how to balance code

with constructability. You fight for client outcomes, not plan checker approval. You live in the real world, not the spreadsheet.

🧠 What You’ll Actually Do

Project Oversight:

Own the technical setup for every new project (load path strategy, design approach, delegation strategy).

Provide design direction to junior engineers and drafters.

Manage QA and final deliverables — catch issues before they hit the city.

Stamp drawings and reports (UT and surrounding states preferred).

Team Leadership:

Be the go-to for structural questions, mentoring EITs and empowering fast decisions.

Refine templates, workflows, and processes to reduce rework and speed up delivery.

Help hire and train engineers who think like you.

Systems & Efficiency

Identify where automation or AI tools can eliminate friction.

Build or improve SOPs, checklists, and QA tools.

Work with the Operations team to streamline project flow and communication.

🧰 Tech Stack:

Analysis: RISA / RAM / SAP2000

Modeling: Revit, occasional SketchUp

Docs & Review: Wrike, Bluebeam, Notion, Google Workspace

Automation (Optional but Valued): Excel scripting, Python, Airtable, Notion AI, ChatGPT Pro

📜 Minimum Qualifications:

PE license required (multi-state or open to reciprocity strongly preferred).

6–15 years in structural engineering (buildings-focused, not bridges or towers).

Strong grasp of IBC, ASCE 7, NDS, ACI, AISC (2018–2024 codes).

Prior experience leading design teams or training junior engineers.

Able to give clear, confident design answers quickly — not after 3 days of re-analysis.

Comfortable delegating, reviewing, and trusting others’ work — without micromanaging.

You are comfortable and confident talking to real people - both clients and team members.

🔍 You’ll Thrive Here If You…

Want to step into a department leadership role, not grind out calcs forever.

Are sick of plan checkers who demand unnecessary over-design.

Know when to say “this works” instead of chasing perfection.

Enjoy empowering younger engineers to think critically and move fast.

Want to own your calendar, lead client meetings, and speak with authority.

Like building systems and automations that eliminate wasted effort.

Get excited about using AI to assist with reports, calcs, or document prep.

🚫 This Role is NOT for You If…

You need a PM to spoon-feed tasks and deadlines.

You’re more comfortable over-designing than defending simplicity.

You don’t want to mentor, train, or lead others.

You want to stay “deep in the weeds” on projects rather than lead from above.

You’re intimidated by ChatGPT or tech automation tools.

🎯 First 90 Days: What Success Looks Like

Own setup + QA for active projects across different building types.

Resolve team questions/issues without escalation.

Refactor internal templates or SOPs that speed up team execution.

Lead client or team meetings.

Stamp and send multiple deliverables with zero founder intervention.

💥 Why Join Ballpark:

High autonomy and direct client impact.

Clear path to Director of Engineering role (or company profit sharing).

Use modern tools and automation-first workflows — not archaic templates.

Flexible work with results-first accountability.

Competitive compensation with bonuses tied to billables and profitability.
